From Wadawurrung Country to the Venice Biennale
Earlier this year, Marlene Gilson presented her paintings at the Venice Biennale 2024, but more than ten years ago Marlene’s first exhibition hung alongside her daughter Deanne’s artwork in the Art Gallery of Ballarat.
It was the first local indigenous Art of Place I’d come across.
With the assistance of ArtsAtlas, supported by the City of Ballarat’s Arts and Culture Unit, I asked Marlene and Deanne if I could profile their Art and stories. They have both come a long way with their individual arts practice.

Journey to Balibo, East Timor

In September 2013, I travelled to East Timor to attend a ceremony in Balibo to mark 10 years of friendship and the establishment of the community house. I had great fun staying with the Alma nuns and children at their orphanage in Dili.
